Lake Clear Wabblers have been angler favourites since 1920. To be able to claim the title of being the original and still most popular lure in this spoon style nearly 100 years later is saying something. The classic shape of the original Lake Clear Wabblers have often been copied but never duplicated. The genuine silver and 24 carat gold finishes found on; Williams, Mooselook and Savant manufactured by Brecks are now the standard on Lake Clear. Nothing reflects light like precious metals. Current holder of the New York state record speckled trout at 6.03 lbs. taken at Silver Lake NY in 2013. It is fitting that the lake Clear Wabbler developed in New York State holds the state record.Tight lines!Enjoy your time on the water and please practice a selective harvest to ensure a future fishery for all.
The Lake Clear Wabbler is almost 100 years old. Many others have imitated it but never duplicated the effectiveness of the original. It was so effective that it became a lure style of its own with similar lures offered by numerous manufacturers, including Williams with the Flasher series. It remains the original and maintains its place as the angler favourite for trout. The original Wabbler was cut out of a headlight bezel with a pair of tin snips in 1920 by Mr. H. Robare, a French Canadian fishing guide at Clear Lake in the Adirondacks of upstate New York. He was looking to improve his odds and that he did. News of his success soon got around and Mr. Robare started making more of these lures and christened them “The Lake Clear Wabbler™”.
Mr. Arthur Freer of Gilbertsville NY acquired the lake Clear Wabbler business on December 16, 1957. Mr. freer had been an outdoor products salesman in the region and knew of the reputation of the Lake Clear Wabbler. He maintained the business until in 1985 he sold the business to Mr. Thomas Delaney Sr.. Thomas sr. expanded the selection and added painted colour finishes and new items to the selection, growing the business. In 1998 his son Thomas Delaney acquired it from his father. Thomas jr. also expanded the selection adding glow finishes. In February 2014 Brecks acquired the business. The equipment, dies and all assets of the company were transported to our facilities where we also manufacture Williams, Mooselook and Savant lures. Our claim to fame is the quality genuine silver and 24 Carat gold finishes found on the original Williams lures. Brecks established its own state of the art plating facility following the acquisition of the Williams brand in 1989. These finishes are now found on our other brands as well, including Lake Clear.Nothing reflects any and all available light like silver. A chrome or nickel finish often referred to as “silver” reflects a gray cast in as little depth as a few feet. Visibility compared to genuine silver in low light conditions is literally night and day. Gold has much better reflective qualities than brass often referred to as “gold”. Our finishes are protected by an outer plated coat called “electroclear” on our silver, ½ & ½ and copper lures which is baked in a 350 degree oven for 45 minutes. This process renders the lures virtually tarnish proof and will not yellow with age.Do our finishes cost a bit more. Yes they do. Are they a better lure, we believe so and know they are that much more effective. Are you worth it? We think so. Lures built by anglers for anglers. Lures that have always been proudly made in North America!
The original design Wabbler at 3-1/8”length x 1-1/2” width, weighing 1/3 oz. The larger wide bodied shape of the LCW1 offers plenty of flash and a wide side to side movement which imparts a darting motion to the trailing bait or fly. Most effective trolled slowly and a perennial trout favourite, followed by a 12 to 24 inch leader and baited hook or fly.Offered in a variety of colour choices. The original metallic silver, copper and gold finishes in mirror or Nuwrinkle “hammered” which effectively doubles the surface area of the lure, are very popular. Proven single and multi colour patterns (Blue, Orange, Chartreuse, Red…) can be very effective on different days and under different water or light conditions. The newer Glow finishes have also proven themselves, especially in low light conditions or at dawn and dusk.
LCW3, the willow leaf inspired shape of the LCW
Slightly smaller and narrower than the original, the LCW3 at 3”length x 1-1/8” width, weighing ¼ oz has a distinctly different tighter action and smaller profile than the original LCW1. Equally effective in its own right, some days and in some waters it sometimes outperforms the original. It pays to experiment on any given day until you find the right combination of colour, size, speed and depth.
LCW5, the smallest junior Lake Clear Wabbler
The #5 Wabbler at 2” length x 1” width and 1/6 oz is the perfect attractor spoon when less is more. A smaller and narrower presentation when fish are neutral can be very effective.
Lake Clear small gang trolls are a good option when more is better. By that we mean when you want get their attention with plenty of flash and vibration. Incorporating the fluted G.M. Skinner blades with red attractor beads.12 inches in length and sporting 3 blades each, the front blade is larger than the trailing Back 2. Lake Clear gang trolls are offered in 2 sizes; the larger LC544 combination of a #5 blade and 2 #4 blades and the slightly smaller LC422, a #4 and 2 x #2 blades. Fished in the same presentation as the Lake Clear Wabbler with a trailing bait or fly, the gang trolls emit flash and vibration 3 fold with 3 blades.
